Merrie Monarch week is one of my favorite times of the year. Hilo town comes alive to celebrate hula, Hawaiian culture, and the legacy of King David Kalākaua.
This year, HIE is once again setting up at Hana Hou Hilo on Wednesday, April 8. We are thrilled to be part of this festive week, and we wanted to share a few more exciting events taking place alongside the hula competitions.
Our Guide to Merrie Monarch
Sig Zane Monday through Friday | 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A trip to Hilo isn’t complete without a shopping spree at Sig Zane. Another exciting collaboration with Salvage Public will be available in-store on April 8.
HIE Trunk Show at Hana Hou Hilo Wednesday, April 8 | 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
We're so excited to be popping up again at the perfect Hana Hou Hilo. Aunty Michelle and Shadi curate Hawaiian designers, a rack of vintage that I always find something on, and, of course, the beautiful pāpale. Our dear friends from Luana Aloha will also be popping up with their signature Hawaiian and Tahitian pareu dresses and tops. Plus, Hana Hou x Mai’åna's drop no 2, and Matt Bruening's Spring 2 collection is launching, too!
Hōʻike (Exhibition Night) Wednesday, April 8 | 6 p.m. | Edith Kanakaʻole Stadium
This is one of the most magical nights of the entire week. Hālau Kekuhi is always powerful and stunning, and this year, with the loss of Aunty Nālani Kanaka‘ole in January, it will surely be the most moving performance.
Hilo Aloha Wednesday through Saturday, April 8–11 | Palace Theater
The historic Palace Theater becomes a gathering place for local practitioners, artists, educators, and small businesses—a beautiful, living celebration of life on Hawaiʻi Island that runs all week long. We heard that Rocket Ahuna is bringing a special colorway of the coveted Maile t-shirt on Thursday, April 9, at 10 a.m. (and a portion of the proceeds will support Maile conservation with Limahuli Garden & Preserve).
Manuheali‘i Pop-Up Wednesday-Saturday, April 8-11 | 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. | SCP Hilo Hotel Shop this beloved brand in person (including the Aloha Collection collaboration), and enjoy the beautiful sounds of live Hawaiian music at the hotel.
Merrie Monarch Hawaiian Arts Fair Wednesday through Saturday | Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium
The official arts fair is always an annual favorite. Local artists, crafters, and live entertainment across four days. It’s a wonderful place to find something truly handmade and meaningful. I especially love finding beautiful shells and pāpale here.
Merrie Monarch Royal Parade Saturday, April 11 | 10:30 a.m. | Downtown Hilo
The parade winds through the streets of downtown Hilo and is pure joy from start to finish. Hula, music, color, and community all in one.
Merrie Monarch week is one of those times when Hilo reminds you why this island is so special. We hope to see you at Hana Hou on Wednesday!
