For many of us in Hawai'i and across the Pacific, slipping into a mu'umu'u is like wrapping yourself in home—whether you're at a family gathering, running errands, or simply enjoying a beautiful afternoon. Each print tells a story: tropical florals that mirror the islands' natural beauty, traditional patterns that honor culture, or vibrant colors that capture the spirit of celebration.
In honor of Mu‘umu‘u Month, we're celebrating the mu'umu'u through a variety of style-minded women who love them. During Mele’s latest mu‘umu‘u party, they shared more about their favorite mu'u and what makes each one special.

Cappy of Number 808 in Na Palaka O Hawai‘i
“I found this dress in a boutique in Hilo. It was about to close, and there were only a few pieces left. I saw this dress hanging in the back and fell in love with it.”

Janu of Radio Hula
"My love for vintage comes from the surprises, colors, and different styles that find me in awe. Vintage is a love of life to me. It gives me a spring in my step, whether I’m walking, dancing hula, or hanging out at home."

I love the simplicity of it the ease of this dress, because it’s never wrinkly, and it’s comfortable. I also love the color, the way the sleeves, and the yolk are on the dress. It’s super flattering, even though it’s a big dress.

Audrey of Luana Aloha in a found mu‘u from Tahiti
"Tahiti is my favorite place in the world, and this mu‘u screams Tahitienne! Mu‘u’s are the ultimate comfort—you can eat what you want, and I love how they cross cultures."

Gina of Smartees Manufacturing in Mamo Howell
“This particular mu‘u has the most intricate pintucking detail that you can hardly see. A tale of times past when craftsmanship and slow, mindful fashions were at the forefront of design. Mu‘umu‘u are a time capsule of sorts, highlighting the very best of living and loving in Hawai‘i. Mu‘u represents all of our favorite things, colors that spark joy, patterns that create the scenery of our daily lives, all wrapped up in a party dress that allows for a good time. All the while feeling royal!”

Artist Moana in Allen Akina
“This mu‘u is amazing to me because of the dramatic sleeves, the beautiful print, and all our extravaganza around it! I love celebrating Hawai‘i fashion; the prints and colors are so special.”

Jyoti in Malia of Honolulu
“Mele was with me when I bought this from Janu [of Radio Hula]! I love the uniqueness of each mu‘u. I wish I knew more about them, but the sheer beauty is enough.”

HIE co-founder Meleana in Allen Akina
This is a new (yet vintage) Allen Akina featuring his beautiful ʻulu print. This piece was added to my collection in such a fun way when a follower from Europe reached out, knowing I might love it and wondering if it belonged in my collection. I never thought of myself as a ‘collector,’ but I guess this makes it official?!

Designer Lauren in Liberty House
My mu’u is from Honomu, Hawai‘i island. I was shopping with my dad many years ago and found it. I love that it’s from Liberty House, the department store of our childhoods.
